Any movie that starts with a mouse running through a maze is going to get a good review from me. The movie is of the made for TV variety and is based on the best-selling, award winning 1966 novel of the same name written by Daniel Keyes. This is the second movie made about the book, with the first being Charly in 1968.

The story revolves around an intellectually disabled man who undergoes a surgery to try to make him a genius. Along the journey we see how people interact with our main character Charlie Gordon based on his mental capacity, and Charlie deals with everyone else as his intelligence changes and he understands his past more clearly. Matthew Modine does a nice job in his role as the main character and the supporting characters are good also.. Overall, while this does not have (nor need) a big budget to be successful, the movie is well made.

This is a good family movie and I suggest every teen read the book.

The movie has many maze scenes which is always a good thing for me ! I give it a 6.8/10.

Check out the trailer below which features Algernon in the maze !

Maze Runner: The Death Cure (2018) Movie Review

Maze Runner: The Death Cure (2018) IMDB

Maze Runner the Death Cure (2018) movie poster

The third and final film in The Maze Runner series, The Death Cure aims to clear up all the questions you have had along the way, Why ? Who ? WCKD ? The tagline for this movie is “Every Maze Has an End” and it really does fit the storyline. In our first movie in this trilogy he saw our characters trying to escape a giant mysterious maze. In our middle story we saw a perilous journey across a wasteland. And in this final installment we get out group of heroes trying to break into the Last City (essentially the goal of the maze).

Without getting into the different factions and names in the story - if you read the book you would understand and if you didn’t it’s just a bunch of silly jargon anyway, this movie becomes a rescue mission. The action sequences are good and the story fine as long as you have seen the first 2 movies.

I also want to mention that the movie posters for this film are excellent if you like maze artwork. 2 versions of the poster made my post about the The 10 Best Maze Themed Movie Posters. This is a nice end to the story.

Worth a look if you saw movies number 1 and 2. I rate it a 6.5/10.

Mazes (Útvesztök) (2008) Movie Short Review

MAZES (ÚTVESZTÖK) (2008) movie poster

If there is one kind of video that I always watch it is a hand-drawn animation. Get me on YouTube and give me a Bill Plympton video and I am happy. That is what this short film makes me feel like. It is a quick 8 minute short film by Hungarian artist István Orosz. One of his many artistic jobs in his career was as a poster designer and yet I could not find a movie poster for this short, so I made my own using the video. Útvesztök is Hungarian for maze.

On to the actual short. It is a series of 9 sections, each that starts with a maze, starting with the Ninth maze and working down. You see a maze that is then solved using an on screen pencil - and the solve is always the number of the maze. Next you get a series of animated scenes; then maze 8, with the maze solved on screen, etc. It is fun to watch the animations and see what is going to be shown next. And the mazes look wonderful.

Fun to watch !

I rate it a 6.5 / 10

Meander (2020) Movie Review

Meander (2020) IMDB

Meander (2020) movie poster

Meander is a French sci-fi film from 2020 directed by Mathieu Turi. The film starts with a woman laying in the road who needs to move out of the way of an oncoming car. The woman ends up accepting a ride in the car with a man and they begin a conversation. Things go south (no spoiler) and the woman ends up passing out. She wakes in a strange, small room with a device attached to her wrist and dressed in techy full body suit.

The majority of the movie becomes a series of obstacles that she must overcome to escape the maze of tunnels she is stuck in. Walls are moving, countdowns are happening, water is flooding, tunnels are heating up, etc. It is a 1 person version of The Cube but is happening tunnels instead of rooms. Add in a strange creature (possibly an alien?), and some flashbacks of her life and we get a science fiction movie. The movie is well shot and will give you a feeling of claustrophobia.

Through trial and error we get a woman trying to solve the maze, using clues others have left for her to find the exit. Does she? You will have to watch to find out !

Interesting movie, but a bit too weird for me. 4.8 / 10
