Maze Comic Book Cover #82 - Knight Fever

Issue #82 in my comic book cover series is called Knight Fever and features the maze of a knight in his armor. I went with a simple background to match the simple kids level maze.

My comic book cover mazes can be found in 2 places:

Maze of the Week #186 - Avalon Boardwalk Maze - Catalina Island

Another maze I made for someone. This maze of the Avalon Boardwalk on Catalina Island in California was fun to make. It becomes Maze of the Week #186. The landscape breaks into 3 sections: The water, the boardwalk and the hills. For the water I used wavy walls to simulate waves, while the high palm trees in the center of the picture created barriers I need to work around when creating the maze. The buildings were difficult from a maze perspective. As a solver the water and the hills are where the main maze portions live. The style is different than I normally make.

I did the maze in black and white, but then added color to see how it would come out. Either works. The color version does not meaningfully improve the maze. I think you might be able to do better by using the black and white version as a coloring page. I did make some minor changes to it to widen some pathways that may be helpful. Here are both versions:

Downloads of the color version are available on the homepage.

The Old Guard 2 (2025) Movie Review

The Old Guard 2 (2025) (IMDB)

The Old Guard 2 movie poster

I read comics just about every day. If you are a fan of comics you may have read The Old Guard graphic novel series by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernandez. I recommend it. When I saw it was to become a movie on Netflix I was excited. Charlize Theron ! Yes please. And the first movie was fine. I wished it was better but it was worth a watch. I was hoping for a sequel that was even better because I knew the story was good from previously reading it.

Sadly, this movie is flat and feels unfinished. The story was not fulfilling and it felt a bit boring. I would skip it. But, I am writing a review of the movie because in the opening scene the group splits up as they are raiding an estate and one half of the group takes “the maze” portion of the job. They take out gunman in a hedge maze. I’m going to be honest, they say maze but they never show it from afar and it seems more like a garden than a maze so the movie didn’t even get this right.

Book Review: Through the labyrinth : designs and meanings over 5000 years

Book Review: Through the labyrinth : designs and meanings over 5000 years (2000) by Hermann Kern AMZN

360 pages, Prestel

Through the labyrinth book cover, by Hermann Kern

When I first acquired this book from the local library I thought based on the size and weight of the book (oversized and weighing around 5 pounds) that it would be a typical coffee table book full of pictures. And, to be fair, the book is full of pictures. But the 360 pages are also filled with information on labyrinths and mazes, with our author approaching them throughout history from a variety of perspectives. While in the past I have listed what I have learned in a book in my reviews, for this volume the list would simply be too long. I think it is more informative to say, I think this is the most well researched book on the topic I have ever read. It is also one of the few books that has a chapter (you’ll find it in chapter 14) about “Celebrations and Games” which gives examples of the very first maze artist, Francesco Segala (c. 1535-1592), known for his sculptures, but a pioneer in making maze pictures.

I guarantee that as you work your way through the 19 chapters you will find new information, new photos (there are an amazing 749) and new ideas you have never seen anywhere else. My main suggestion in reading and experiencing this book is to take your time (if you are lucky enough to get this from your local library you’ll want to renew it at least once), and take great notes along the way.

Here is my previous list of important maze books to which I will be adding this book !
