Gotcha - The Atari maze video game from 1973

Today I want to give some background on Gotcha, the first arcade maze game, which came out in the Fall of 1973. Some of you may be thinking, but I thought Mouse in the Maze (1959) was the first computerized maze game. And you would be correct…which is why the word “arcade” is so important in my first sentence. Then, because we have short attention spans and can’t seem to keep on subject you may think - - - 1959 ? There were computer games in 1959 ? Yes, and those computers filled an entire room !! If you want to stay off subject you can read about Mouse in a Maze here and see that enormous computer.

And we are back. For now. Gotcha ! Also from my research, Gotcha was the first color video game. Today it would be hard to find a game not in color, but I do recommend 2 Japanese games featuring Samurai - Trek to Yomi and Ghost of Tsushima: Kurosawa Mode. It didn’t take me long to get off track.

Let’s look at the gameplay of Gotcha. I will describe what you will see in the gameplay video below. Like all early games things were pretty simple. Two small specs are in a maze looking structure - they are a plus sign and a box. The goal is for one player to pursue the other, and then they switch roles. Each round has a time limit between 30 seconds and 2 minutes depending on the machine you are playing on. You get a point for catching the other person. In the background is a beeping sound that gets louder and closer together the closer a person is to being caught. Worst. Soundtrack. Ever ?

Does this look like a fun game ? No. But in 1973 it may have kept you busy for a few minutes when you weren’t playing Pong !

The Houses October Built (2014) Movie Review

The Houses October Built movie poster

If there is one thing you can be sure of it is that a movie about haunted houses will contain a maze ! And even though it is commonly referred to as a maze it is most likely a labyrinth ! How many times have you gone to a haunted house and been given a choice of which direction you can go ? Honestly only the absolute best ones and even then it is really rare (note to house owners).

So this movie is about a group of 5 friends who take an RV out before Halloween and record their experiences visiting various haunted houses on a road trip. Sounds like a fun real world trip. But they are also on the lookout for a secret, hard to find haunted house that is known for taking things to the extreme. And they find it. Oops. Bad idea. Either way along the road trip they visit many haunted houses that put them into mazes or labyrinths !

Cool concept. Wish it was a bit better executed. Get it, executed. Whatever.

I give it a 4.9/10.

400 Days (2015) Movie Review

Do you remember the movie with Pauly Shore from 1996 starring Pauly Shore called Bio-Dome ? Pauly and his friend get stuck in a long term science experiment that they can’t leave for a year. This movie has a similar concept but more Sci-Fi based, with 4 astronauts locked in a 400 day simulation of travel to another planet to test their psyche. One day things go awry and weird stuff starts happening. Is it part of the simulation and a test ? The movie watcher and the crew are trying to figure it out.

During an episode one of the crewmembers locks himself in a room where he has appears to have a drawn a maze on the walls that he is now solving. He is not in his right mind (offensive for us maze lovers no ?). Here is a look at the scene:

If you like sci-fi you have a better chance to like this film, but you will be wanting more (answers, better acting, better bad guys)

I give it a 5/10.

Maze of the Week #62 - Windmill Maze

Maze of the week #62 is of a traditional windmill. I had been thinking about what structures would make interesting mazes and I always came back to a windmill but never followed through until now. I really enjoyed seeing them up close when I visited Belgium, and specifically in Bruges. While this is not a specific windmill (the most famous being on top of the Moulin Rouge in Paris) if you want to learn more about them check out wikipedia.

National Geographic makes nice videos:

Photos: Both taken by me of the aforementioned Moulin Rouge and a windmill in Bruges (which is a wonderful city to visit BTW).

The Maze: When I completed this in black and white I wasn’t satisfied so I added a color version that I prefer. Most mills have neutral colorings but I found a few photos of them with colored roofs.

I hope you enjoy the maze. If you want to solve it, a free download is available.
