Maze and Labyrinth News - June 2025

Thanks to the mighty algorithm I read a lot of articles and watch many videos on labyrinths and mazes. And that makes even more information find me. I often find interesting items that don’t quite fit into their own blog post on the site and they get lost into the ether. Today I wanted to try pulling a few together. Hopefully you find something interesting !

  • Westmoreland County Museum of American Art (Greensburg, PA) Art Maze

This very cool maze made of decorated boxes seems like a fun activity ! It will be open through August 17th and you can plan a trip on their website !

  • An Art Maze in Trestle Park

If you live near Manning, Iowa, they just opened a wooden maze in Trestle Park. The inside walls of the maze are decorated with artwork from the community ! You can read about the initiative in this news article which also includes a great photo of the maze.

  • The Durbuy Labyrinth returns this year

Located in Durbuy, Belgium, this giant corn maze is scheduled to be open from July 1 to October 5, 2025. The size is 11 hectares, or just over 27 acres. What I like about this corn maze is 2 things: It has very wide pathways, and it appears to have been planted in the final design rather than being fully planted and cut later. This gives the maze a cleaner look from above. You can plan a trip on their website. The complex is very kid friendly seems to have plenty of things to do.

  • A legacy labyrinth in Canada

A beautiful labyrinth built on the prairie located near Grasslands National Park in Saskatchewan. You can plan a trip there, including a tour on the website. From the pictures, this is one of the best looking labyrinths I have seen, Great location. It can be found on Google Maps for easy directions.

  • A Laser Maze in Kansas City

Can we agree that we don’t have enough laser mazes in the world ? Well a new one was built by engineers in Kansas City as discussed in this article. Taking place at Science City at Union Station. Seems like a fun day !

  • Abu Dhabi builds really big things, including mazes

The gist of this is an interactive installation where the art on the walls changes as you move through it. I think the best way to understand this is to just watch the video below ! Oh and this isn’t the only maze themed attraction in the area - how about a life sized Pac Man Maze ?

  • Grand Rapids is building a 3 story maze this Fall

This seems to be a variation of what is happening in the UAE above. Grand Rapids holds an ArtPrize event from Sept. 18 - Oct. 4 and this year they are building a 12K square foot exhibit that is a maze. You can learn about the ArtPrize event here.

  • Buy a property with 2 mazes in Australia

This isn’t the first property we have seen being sold with a maze on site (Looking to Buy a House with a Maze ?). This property is a tourist site built around 2 mazes. The real estate listing includes videos and great information on the site.

Neo Tokyo (1987) Movie Review

Neo Tokyo (1987) (IMDB)

Neo Tokyo movie poster

This Japanese animated movie is a trilogy of stories, with the first called "Labyrinth labyrinthos” where a young girl and her cat escape into a odd world they get to through a large clock. The world has flashes of long hallways and pathways that make it seem like a maze, but things tend to transform quickly in this fantasy space. We also get a big top and lots of clowns. The point of the story ? I’m not really sure, but everything looks great. The second story is about a racer, and the last story is about a man working with construction worker robots. To me, the last story feels more relevant today than back in 1987 as AI and robots become more and more advanced.

Overall everything looks great, but it is a bit weird and the first 2 stories are lacking.

I give it a 6/10.

Qala (2022) Movie Review

Qala (2022) (IMDB)

Qala movie poster

Today I bring you another movie that had an unexpected maze show up in it. It comes to us from Netflix and is a Bollywood drama about a talented female singer. The good news for those of you who hate subtitles is that this is dubbed into English ! Our main character, Qala, is a talented singer who is always having problems from a dominant mother. The story revolves around singers making music, but the mood is decidedly dark with the cinematography featuring shadows and dark settings. The story involves jealousy and familial relationships. Early in the movie we have a scene that caught my attention where out main character goes outside into the garden of her house into a maze (she visits again later in the movie). Here is a screenshot of the maze:

Overall this movie is worth a watch.

I give it a 6.5/10.

The plan for Weekly mazes in the second half of the year

The first half of the year has focused on me remaking previous mazes with 2 techniques to improve them. I called them Maze of the Week Re-duxes. Generally it worked and I am happy with the results. For the second half of the year we will return to new mazes. I actually have made more mazes than I need for the rest of the year. First, I will clean out the random mazes that include some scenes, items, landscapes and insects. Then starting in Mid-August new mazes will be from my Air, Land, Sea and Space collection. I wanted to create some mazes for kids but with improved illustrations. I ended up making vehicles of all types, thus my name. Planes, trains, cars, buses, rockets, and boats are all included. I made 47 in total (and may make more). I am going to select the best ones for the Maze of the week. The goal will be to create a kids book out of the mazes, including those that don’t make MOTW status. In order to make all the mazes available on the website, I will write a blog post introducing the extra vehicle mazes each Wednesday and a few more on Friday. They are mix or color (some with backgrounds), and black & white versions, including some that are perfect as coloring pages. It starts Monday with a maze I started, then abandoned of a famous monument in the US.

I also will be launching books in the Fall - a mix of both free versions on this site and paid versions on Amazon. If you want to be alerted to these launches sign-up for my free book alerts.
