Moscow Zero (2006) Movie Review

Moscow Zero movie poster

The start of this movie sets a tone, and that tone is cold, snowy and overcast. Our movie is about a priest (played by Vincent Gallo) who visits the underground of Moscow in search of a friend who went missing. It just so happens this underground has many layers to it and is rumored to contain demons and the entrance to hell. This underground is basically a labyrinth which is difficult to navigate, full of homeless people and demons. It does not seem much warmer than ground level. As far as maze movies go, it reminds me a bit of Catacombs which takes place in the catacombs of Paris, The Depraved which takes place in Berlin’s underground and Jeruzalem which partially involves the underground of…..Jerusalem (that one was easy). Here are my reviews of those 3:

Catacombs (2007) Movie Review

The Depraved (2011) Movie Review

Jeruzalem (2015) Movie Review

What do those movies and this one all have in common ? They all suck.

I give it a 4/10

Ray Liotta stars as a medical examiner, Dr. Krane, in this thriller about a man who is obsessed with finding the man who killed his wife. He meets a doctor who is experimenting with a new drug that allows the memory of one rat (and hopefully in the future, a person) to be transferred to another. The drug is shown helping a rat solve a maze easily that it had never been in after being injected with memories from another rat familiar with running the maze. Dr. Krane steals some of the serum for himself and begins experimenting with using it to track down the killer. A twisted mystery unfolds as the pursuit continues. The serum helps long the way and the story gets complicated. Overall, the movie is well acted, as a dark tone and has a relatively novel idea for the premise. The movie is worth a watch but you’ll need to stay off your devices to follow the story.

I give it a 6.2/10

Wonderful Days (2003) Movie Review

Wonderful Days (2003) (IMDB)

I watch a very diverse catalog of movies. More movies than anyone I know, and sometimes I stumble across a maze or labyrinth movie by chance. That is what happened with this Korean cyberpunk movie. About 15 minutes in as we are still in the set-up portion of the movie I saw this screen of one of our characters going through a mechanical door ! Looks like a cool maze to me.

Wonderful Days movie - Maze door

The door slides to the side, revealing a second maze door ! So while this is fast, it is definitely a maze and I so I am adding it to my maze movie list. As far as the movie, it is a futuristic, cyberpunk, Korean adult animation about a city of survivors from pollution and climate change. It is an ok story. This is a classic movie where you know if it is the type of movie you might like when you start it. I think the world that was created and the fell of the movie were better than the actual movie personally.

I give it a 6.0/10.

Killer Clans (1976) Movie Review

When I saw this movie and read it contained a labyrinth scene I assumed it was a kung fu movie. That is when I learned about wuxia movies as I had never heard the term before. Martial art movie with fantasy mixed in taking place in China is my general overview. This particular movie features feuding clans who do much of their fighting with swords and plenty of double crosses, so this is not the type of movie that lends itself to distractions while watching. As far as the labyrinth scene, there is an underground canal system that becomes part of the plot and is mazelike. Nothing special. Nothing terrible. A movie you catch on tv one day and you are too lazy to change the channel.

I give it a 5.8/10.
