Maze and Labyrinth News - August 2025

I am back again with all the things I found during the month that didn’t quite fit into it’s own blog post, but that I found interesting about mazes and labyrinths. Some news is evergreen and can be found in past posts:

Maze and Labyrinth News - July 2025

  • The Largest Corn Maze in the World !

It isn’t officially the largest, but that is only because it costs a significant amount of money$$$$$ for Guinness to give you a the record. But we all know that this 121 acre maze is the real deal. The Valley Corn Maize in East Grand Forks, Minnesota opens on August 25th. Plan a visit on their website. Here is an article with a great picture of the enormous maze !

  • A Sesame Street Sunflower Maze in Connecticut

The Lyman orchard is planning an Elmo/Sesame Street themed sunflower maze for August 2025. Ribbon cutting was August 2nd. Plan a visit on their website. Here is a look at last years maze to give you an idea:

  • Another Sunflower Maze in Paris, Illinois

Seems like my algorithm knows I have been seeing sunflower mazes a lot lately ! This one in Paris, Illinois is located at L&A Family Farms. You can plan a trip on their website. If you missed the sunflower maze, the corn maze opens on October 4th !

  • A Bamboo Labyrinth (Maze) located near Buenos Aires, Argentina

This labyrinth is more formally called the Laberinto Pampa and is located in San Antonio de Areco. For the location check out this pin on Google Maps. This video (in Spanish but can be translated in CC) speaks to the creation of the labyrinth. It also has the all important drone shots.

  • A Dog Maze in Scotland

Located on the Cairnie Fruit Farm, this dog maze is cut into hedges and is located in Cupar, Fife, Scotland. The Google Maps Entry has images of previous versions and gives you and idea of activities available. Check out their website to plan your trip. How about some drone footage of a prior years maze:

  • The Hever Castle Water Maze

I just learned about this water maze from Hever Castle in Kent, England. Wrong turns get you wet !!! The first person to walk each day has a surprise…but after awhile the wet blocks are a nice cheat ! Plan your trip on the castle website. The grounds also feature a beautiful Yew Maze.

  • A Cooper Flagg Corn Maze in Maine

Located in Corinna, Maine, this corn maze features the recent #1 pick for the Dallas Mavericks, Cooper Flagg. You can plan your visit at the Thunder Road Farm website (be sure tocheck out their previous years mazes). Check out a local news broadcast featuring the maze.

  • Movement Mazes is Bismarck, North Dakota

Very cool idea by local artists to get people moving and creating interesting interactive art for walkers to enjoy ! Coming to us from Bismarck, North Dakota, they call them movement mazes. Here is an article showing the mazes, or check out the story below:

  • A new maze themed poster I found

Vicky Velingkar (2019), a Marathi language thriller from India features a maze in the background. It isn’t one of my The 10 Best Maze Themed Movie Posters but it could be added to More Movie Posters featuring Maze and Labyrinth Artwork.

Maze of the Week #188 - Matterhorn Maze

I wanted to try to make more landscape mazes, and if you are going to make them, I knew they should be of places people have heard of. So, that is part of how this Matterhorn Maze came to become Maze of the Week #188. Something I did not realize until I looked into it was the peak climbing season for mountain, which is in July/August, thus the posting of the maze now and not in Winter when I originally thought I would post it.

This maze was an option for a commission I did. I made it in black and white, with the exception of the trees which I made in green, knowing that they would print in grey if printed. Obviously it needed to be in black and white, easy for a snow capped landscape. Of course, keeping with my theme this year, I wanted to see if I could enhance the maze for the website. Let’s see how I did.

Here are the enhancements I made to improve the maze:

1. Added Color - I made the sky blue, which in this case really changes how the mountain looks on the page.

2. Added Shadows - To give the mountain more shape I added shadows to the right side of the mountain.

3. Added Rock Textures - I added sections of texture to mimic the rock formation on various parts of the mountain.

4. Added Branding - Not needed for the book version, but added under the title for here.

I think each of the first 3 changes, despite seeming small made a big difference in the final maze. Download of the maze is available on the homepage.

10 Unbelievably Bad Maze Movies to Never, Ever Watch

Want revenge? Forget voodoo dolls. Just recommend these awful maze movies to your enemies. So many movies involve mazes as part of the plot. I have reviewed over 120 maze movies on this site. These are the worst of them. Movies that you should not watch under any circumstances. If an enemy of yours asks for a recommendation for a movie suggest one of these. Tell them it starts out slow but really gets good at the end. They’ll think you are crazy but what do you care, they are your enemy.

Now, I should mention that a few of these movies have good posters or interesting stories from a concept perspective. But, whether it’s the bad acting, the plot, the lack of plot, the cheap production or just general poor directing each of these is terrrrrrrrrrrrriible. I will allow you to watch a trailer for them but stop there !!! DO NOT WATCH THEM.

To find more horrible maze movies I have made a Google Sheet that is sortable by many things, including IMDB score.

The 10 maze movies you should never, ever watch:

#10 Dungeons & Dragons (2000) (IMDB)

Watch the new version from 2023 starring Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez. It has good action sequences and some nice funny moments - and does include a maze scene! It also has a plot which this movie lacks. This version lacks good acting and has bad special effects. I am stunned this is only my 10th worst maze movie.

#9 Shock Labyrinth (2009) (IMDB)

Kids are stuck in a mazelike hospital. The plot makes no sense. It is boring. What could possibly make this worse? Well how about the fact you need to read subtitles for 89 minutes.

#8 The Basement (2008) (IMDB)

A short film of only 29 minutes that takes place…..wait for it……in the basement of a hotel. It’s dark an uninviting and there may be a phantom down there. This was filmed by your neighbor for less than $200 (I’m guessing). Good news. I couldn’t find a trailer but you can find this streaming for free, so there’s that.

#7 Minotaur (2006) (IMDB)

A movie starring Tom Hardy fighting a Minotaur in a labyrinth seems like a good concept. The poster looks ominous. Imagine a snail race in slow motion, narrated by someone who's just had a root canal. That's basically Minotaur. Tom Hardy deserves an Oscar for even managing to stay awake during filming.

#6 Attack of the Gryphon (2007) (IMDB)

If you are a fan of terrible special effects, emphasis on the “special”, then this is the movie for you. I was really hoping that the gryphon, which is part lion and part eagle would be terrifying. It is not. The bad animation does help to distract you from the bad acting though.

#5 ANDRON (2015) (IMDB)

It has so much wasted potential and ‘stars’ Alec Baldwin. But it’s terrible. With bad effects, numerous plot holes, bad acting and really no character that you want to cheer for or against. The bad guys go down like Storm troopers in outfits made by your aunties crafting group. The special effects give special a bad name. Go to the dentist instead. I do like the poster though. Props for the poster.

#4 THE MAZE (2010) (IMDB)

You know how sometimes you notice that a movie is low budget ? Well this movie tries to hide that fact by taking place primarily in a corn field , and yet you still notice it’s low budget. The acting, plot, and ‘twist’ ending you will see coming all make this a never watch film. The trailer isn’t even very good….

#3 Moscow Zero (2006) (IMDB)

Vincent Gallo and Val Kilmer star in this stinker that takes place under the city of Moscow. It seems someone is missing and the underground might contain the entrance to hell. This all seems like a good premise with experienced actors. But really it is just guys walking around in the dark. It is 82 minutes long and they should have cut more out in editing.

#2 Haunted Maze (2017) (IMDB)

Cool Poster. It is difficult to make a movie. But I wonder how many high school students could make a better movie than this for a class project. I could not make a better movie, I admit, but wow this is bad. The trailer is almost unwatchable. See if you can make it through all 2 minutes of the trailer. Then imagine 88 minutes of that except worse because those 2 minutes are supposed to get you excited for the other 86.

Before we get to #1 here are some movies that just missed the terrible list:

Amazingly, none of them have an IMDB rating above 4.5 which is a very low bar. The Man in the Maze, The Turning, Escape Room, 400 Days The Scorpion King 2 and Cube 2:Hypercube. You know how some movies are said to be “movies so bad they're good”. These are not those movies.

#1 Dark Harvest 2 (2004) (IMDB)

A father must go to find his two lost daughters who are stuck in the corn maze. The bad news is they are not alone in the maze which is haunted by 2 ghostly girls. As I write this, the movie has an IMDB score of 1.6 and a Rotten Tomatoes score of 10%. Each of those scores is too high. Take out your phone and film your neighbor and there is a good chance it will make a better movie than this. Great movie poster.

I found a few of these movies streaming for free online. And if you want to see where that is you can do a search on justwatch. I could have included the links here, but please take my advice and skip these !

I suggest you cleanse the palate and there are some great maze movies, like Ready Player One, Inception, The Shining and Prisoners to name a few. If you only watched maze and labyrinth movies for a few days you would be very entertained.
