I was sitting back watching this movie when out of nowhere I hear the word labyrinth and need to go back and re-watch a portion of the movie. In Shazam’s world there are doors to different realms. One of the characters comes out of one and they mention that that door is just a labyrinth.

As far as the movie, this sequel is lacking some of the fun of the first movie. There are a few laughs and a few nice scenes but overall it is a bit bland. While I enjoyed the performances from Helen Mirren and Lucy Lui - is anyone scared of them as the opponents in a superhero film ? Overall, eh.

Maze movie ? Not really. Worth seeing - only if you like DC comics/films and want to be a completist.

I give it a 5.8/10.

Cube (2021) Movie Review

Japanese remake of the sci-fi mystery classic Cube (1997). This remake starts in the same way - 6 men and women wake up in a Cube shaped room and they all speak Japanese and don’t know why. OK, ok. Actually while they do speak Japanese the real problem is they do not know why or how they got there and they need to work together to escape the mazelike cube that is boobytrapped. Then I watched the entire movie and found out the REAL REAL problem is that this movie is not very good. At all. Not every movie needs to be remade, and while I was excited for this one I was very very wrong. But, I did enjoy the movie more than the reviews which were very very bad. Overall it is a skip for me. Just watch the classic original movie.

I give it a 5/10.

The film follows FBI agent Thomas Mackelway (Aaron Eckhart) as he investigates a series of murders committed by a mysterious serial killer who is hunting other serial killers. As Mackelway delves deeper into the case, he begins to suspect that there may be more to the vigilante than meets the eye.

I was watching this psychological thriller and enjoying it although the pacing was a bit slow at times, never good for a thriller. Ben Kingsley is good in the film as you would expect but there was something missing in the story. Audiences agreed as this film lost money. But, the reason I am reviewing it so many years later is because of the final scene, which takes place in a spiral stone labyrinth in the desert ! I can’t tell you what happens without saying SPOILER so I’ll skip that part.

I wanted this film to be better than it was, but the plot gets convoluted at times. I’m wasn’t sure if it was me who was lost or bad filmmaking. Reviews suggest it was the film. Despite that I still enjoyed it and think it is worth watching.

I give it a 6.1/10.

The Turning (2020) Movie Review

THE TURNING (2004) IMDB

The Turning (2004) movie poster

This movie is a modern version of the Henry James novella The Turn of the Screw from 1898. Because this book is in the public domain it has been made into a movie countless times like in 1959, 1974, 1982, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1994, 1995, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2020, 2021, 2022. So, you know the story must be strong because films are not made that many times if they aren’t well received in some way. The most famous film adaption does not share the title of the book however, The Innocents from 1961 starring Deborah Kerr is by far the best version of the story.

This version of the movie also has a different title and the family of Mr. James should be thankful for it. This is a stinker. Not terrible, terrible, but definitely a juicy fart at a dinner party bad. It is a little scary, but just not intense enough. About 15 minutes into the movie as our governess meets her first orphan child they make their way thru a hedge maze on the grounds of the residence. That was the highlight for me. The overall story is about a governess taking care of children on an estate that is haunted.

I have a blog post about the worst maze movies of all time…the link is down below, and I am honestly considering updating it right now. But, there are some really bad movies out there…

I give it a 5/10. I recommend watching The Innocents instead.
