10 Labyrinths to Visit in British Columbia

Did you know there are over 100 labyrinths in BC ? I have selected 10 of the best to visit that are accessible to the public from around the province, focusing on the large population areas. If you want a full list of labyrinths in the state check out the Worldwide Labyrinth Finder.


Before we get to my recommendations for BC I want to tell you about some statistics about labyrinths in Canada from some research I did. Some context for the data above. With 110 labyrinths, BC ranks second in Canada. 81% outdoor labyrinths is above the average of 76% for total Canada. BC’s average labyrinth size of a 45.4 foot diameter is below average a bit (48.6 ft).

What is the largest labyrinth in BC ? With a 197 foot diameter, the Chiron Holistics Labyrinth at Qualicum Beach, British Columbia is the largest labyrinth in BC. It is a modified 7 circuit Cretan style labyrinth that is available to walk by appointment only. It also has extra large pathways so you can walk the pathways with your horse ! What city has the most labyrinths in BC ? The city with the most labyrinths in BC is Vancouver with 13. Here is a table of the cities with 3 or more labyrinths:

BC is also home to the top 4 cities with the highest per capita labyrinths in Canada (minimum 3 labyrinths). Qualicum Beach, BC at 53.75 and North Saanich, BC at 24.52 lead the way for labyrinths per capita. Here is a table of the top 10 cities for this data:

Why visit a Labyrinth ?

Labyrinths are ancient and mysterious symbols that have been used for centuries for meditation, contemplation, and spiritual renewal. They are also a lot of fun to explore! If you're looking for a unique and challenging experience, walk a labyrinth with intention - it often leads to self-discovery. Personally, I like to walk labyrinths between dawn and sunrise or at sunset until dusk, but any time of day works. You may not realize it, but there is probably a labyrinth near where you live. 1. Xenia Retreat Centre Labyrinth

 

Despite being on private property, you are able to make arrangements to walk this beautiful 11 circuit Classical labyrinth located on Bowen Island. Plan a trip on the Xenia website. This is one of 8 large labyrinths in BC with a diameter of 100 feet !

2. Bethlehem Centre Labyrinth

This 11 circuit Chartres style labyrinth is made from brick pavers in the grass, and is surrounded by trees. The labyrinth has an 80 foot diameter and you can plan your trip on the centres website !

3. Cowichan Valley Lavender Labyrinth

 

When I saw this labyrinth I knew I had to include it on this list. It is a square shaped labyrinth with a unique pathway, but more than anything it is here because it is made of lavender ! It is also a very large 100x110 feet ! Plan a trip on their website !

4. Chiron Holistics Labyrinth

You learned above that the Chiron Holistics Labyrinth at Qualicum Beach, British Columbia is the largest labyrinth in BC and also the largest Cretan style labyrinth in Canada. This 7 circuit labyrinth is designed for riders and their horses to walk side-by-side !

5. University of British Columbia Labyrinth

This 7 circuit octagonal labyrinth is located next to the Iona building. Made of concrete, this is one of only 5 octagonal labyrinths in Canada. You can find it on Google Maps with this pin !

6. St. Philip Anglican Church Labyrinth

This wonderful 7 circuit Medieval labyrinth is set in the grass beside the church. The church website has a nice page discussing the labyrinth that is worth reading !

7. Fleetwood Gardens Labyrinth

This 7 circuit Classical labyrinth is located in Fleetwood Park in Surrey. Plan a trip on the parks website, and find the labyrinth easily on Google Maps !

8. Innisfree Farm Labyrinth

 

Located at the Innisfree Farm and Botanical Garden, this 7 circuit Classical labyrinth has an 85 foot diameter.

9. St. John’s Anglican Church, Sardis Labyrinth

 

Installed in 2024 this 11 circuit Chartres style labyrinth is made from brick pavers and is located beside the church. The labyrinth has 2 picnic tables around it and is easily found on Google Maps (see above)

10. Carmanah Point Lightstation Labyrinth

3:40 starts the best view that includes the labyrinth

The Carmanah Point Lightstation Labyrinth has one of the most beautiful labyrinth settings in the world. But it will not be easy to visit ! This 11 circuit Chartres style labyrinth is located on the coast of the Pacific and accessible by multi-day hike ! Here is a map pin to give you the location !

5 TIPS FOR VISITING A LABYRINTH

  1. Set an intention for your walk so you can walk with purpose. It could be prayer, reflection, meditation, contemplation, or openness.

  2. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes, as you will be doing a lot of walking.

  3. Bring water with you, especially if you are visiting on a hot day.

  4. Take your time and enjoy the experience. There is no need to rush through a labyrinth.

  5. Be respectful of other visitors. This includes not making noise and being respectful if walking with other people.
