Can AI Generate Mazes? We Tested 13 AI Art Generators to Find Out

Welcome to the 14th in a series of posts where I will test AI image generators and see how they handle making maze art. I have asked the same 10 prompts from 12 different websites (a 13th Google Gemini was added in 2024). Today we compare the best from each prompt and see who does AI text to maze image the best. If you need to catch-up here is the series so far:

Making Maze Art with AI

Welcome to the finals of my maze making AI challenge. For the finals I will pick the 4 best images from the 12 sites. It is subjective, but there are a few that we could all agree do not make the cut. I will pick 4 finalists, then rank them. At the end I will rank all the sites based on how they did. You can do your own ranking if you would like. All mazes here are from 2023. If you prefer you can jump ahead to the summary of 2023 and then the 2023 winner vs. the best 2026 that is an option.

Prompt 1 - Make a medium difficulty maze of the Eiffel Tower in black and white with arrows at the start and finish.

Stable Diffusion Eiffel Tower Maze
starryAI - Eiffel Tower Maze
Photosonic - Eiffel Tower Maze
Bing AI - Eiffel Tower Maze

The finalists are Stable Diffusion; StarryAI; Photosonic, and Bing AI. I should say that all of the generations were good for this prompt. My rank 1 - StarryAI wins for having the needle included and a maze and the cool viewpoint. 2 - Bing AI a strong second with the interesting maze, 3 - Stable Diffusion, 4 - Photosonic.

Prompt 2 - Draw a medium difficulty large maze of the Empire State Building with the start and goal embedded in the structure

starryai ESB maze
NIghtcafe Empire State Building Maze
Stable Diffusion - Empire State Building Maze
Bing AI Empire State Building Maze

There was a real struggle showing the needle of the building in these generations. Also, including a maze seemed to be difficult for the AI. Our finalists are StarryAI, Nightcafe, Stable Diffusion, and BingAI. My order 1 - Stable Diffusion (because it has the needle and the maze), 2 Bing AI - very cool concept ! 3 - StarryAI because at least it looks mazelike in black and white, and 4 - Nightcafe.

Prompt 3 - Draw a difficult maze of the White House pixel art style

Photosonic - White House pixel maze
Stable Diffusion - White House pixel maze
Dream by Wombo - White House pixel maze
Canva - White House pixel maze

Most AI could do pixel style and my finalists did it best. If I had said make a grid instead of a maze these would be much better. My finalists are Photosonic, Stable Diffusion, Dream by Wombo and Canva. I order them 1 - Stable Diffusion, 2 - Photosonic, and 3 - Dream by Wombo who almost got the building right and correctly included the flag…but that yard ! 4 - Canva who did a 3/4 of a great white house but forgot the maze.

Prompt 4 - Draw a difficult maze that looks like a drawing of a famous building in sketch style

Canva - famous building sketch
Nightcafe - famous building sketch
Stable Diffusion - famous building sketch
starryai - famous building sketch

4 different looking finalists. Canva, Nightcafe, Stable Diffusion and StarryAI made the grade. I want to give a special shoutout to StarryAI who had 4 different outputs that were all very interesting. As far as the other AI generators they typically made a simple maze, some with doors to signify a building. Not very good. My order is 1 - Nightcafe for the great fantasy looking castle in color, 2 - Stable Diffusion, because it has a maze in front of a column building and 3 - Canva, cool building in black and white that looks kind of famous. 4- StarryAI - love it, but doesn’t look like any famous building I have ever seen.

Prompt 5 - Draw a maze in the style of doyoumaze.com of a skyscraper in NYC

Dream by Wombo - skyscraper maze
starryai - skyscraper maze
DeepAI - skyscraper maze
Stable Diffusion - skyscraper maze

None of these used my style (that is good news for me !). Finalists are Dream by Wombo, StarryAI DeepAI, Stable Diffusion. I think the first 2 are very close…I think I will make the order as it is shown.

Prompt 6 - Draw a maze in the style of Sean C Jackson of a scene from a large outdoor market

Canva - outdoor market maze
Dream by Wombo - outdoor market maze
Nightcafe - outdoor market maze
BING AI - outdoor market maze

I want to say that the output of this prompt was varied and interesting. I went with a more famous maze artist to test if the AI would get it (they generally did not). Finalists are Canva, Dream by Wombo, Nightcafe and Bing AI. Because it was closest to what I asked for 1 - Bing AI 2 - Canva, then 3 - Nightcafe because it includes mazes and is situated at the correct SCJ angle. 4 - Dream by Wombo - nice market…no maze.

Prompt 7 - Make a maze of a slice of an orange in color

ToolBaz - Orange slice maze
DALL·E - Orange slice maze
Nightcafe - Orange slice maze
Bing Ai - Orange slice maze

This prompt was poorly written by me I guess. Lots of garbage output IMO. Our finalists are ToolBaz, Dall-E, Nightcafe and Bing AI. These made the cut because they include mazes and oranges. I do not feel strongly about the order after Bing AI…how about ToolBaz, Dall-E, Nightcafe ?

Prompt 8 - Make a maze integrated on top of a photograph of a king sitting on his throne looking cantankerous beside his beautiful queen

starryai -King on throne in a maze
Dream by Wombo - King on throne in a maze
DALL·E - King on throne in a maze
Bing AI - King on throne in a maze

Using the term photo made this interesting. I also got a lot of horror blurred faces generated. Overall I was not impressed with these results. StarryAI, Dream by Wombo,Dall-E and Bing AI are our finalists. 1 - StarryAI because he looks like a deformed James Bond character, 2 - Dream by Wombo because the king looks like the most interesting man in the world, 3 - Bing AI for that king and 4 - Dall-E for including the queen as instructed.

Prompt 9 - Make a solvable maze that is very large and very difficult to solve because it is so complex

Canva maze
Nightcafe maze
starryai maze
Dream by Wombo maze

This was interesting from an output perspective. If an AI could shine with making makes this is where it would have come out. I wanted to see a large maze generated and a few actually delivered. We have Canva, Nightcafe and StarryAI, Dream by Wombo. For me 1 - Nightcafe - this fantasy labyrinth around a castle would have been a great output for #4 above (which Nightcafe won anyway !), 2 - StarryAI - if you could read the labels this would be better, but the maze is doable, and 3 - Canva because it looks like a complicated maze, but if you really attempt it…uh not so much. 4 - Dream by Wombo - just a solid 3D maze.

Prompt 10 - Make a 3d render of a red and blue glossy cube maze

starryai 3D maze
Nightcafe - 3D mazes
ToolBaz - 3D maze
ToolBaz - 3D maze
Dall E 3D mazes

This was a prompt that many AI generators exceled at creating interesting images for. For most I generated 4 images and had trouble picking the best among them..so I bent the rules here and picked a top 5. StarryAI, Nightcafe, ToolBaz, Canva, and Dall-E from top to bottom left to right. Ranking is tough, but I’ll go 1 - Dall-E for so many nice options, 2 - ToolBaz - it’s a small maze but make it bigger and I want to solve it, 3 - Canva - a crisper version of 4 - StarryAI, and 5 - Nightcafe.

AI Generator Results for 2023:

That does it. Let’s tabulate our results and see how everyone did. I will go with a 4,3,2,1 scoring system, with half points for 5th place on the last prompt…time to make a spreadsheet. And here it is:

AI maze challenge results grid
starryai logo
Bing AI logo
Stable Diffusion logo
Nightcafe logo

Congratulations to StarryAI, Bing AI, Nightcafe and Stable Diffusion with the highest scores. This fits with what I found. And it seems like we have 3 sections in the results: The 4 best AI generators, the 4 middle class, and the 4 poor performers. I would say these findings are only for making maze art. Each generator can do wonderful things with the right prompt.

To remind you about the top 4:

StarryAI : You must sign in to use the site and you receive 5 credits per day for free. Each generation will generate 4 images and cost a credit (If you want 8 variations that will cost 3 credits). There are 6 styles to choose from, no style, Fantasy, Portrait, 3D Art, Wooltize and Anime. You may also upload a photo to give the AI “something to start with”.

Bing AI Image Generator: Sign in using your Microsoft account. Using the site is free to create images. Powered by DallE, but when I used it seemed to do a better job than DallE did with the prompts (I do not know why).

Nightcafe : You get 5 free daily credits to create with. Each prompt, or generation will generate only 1 image. It features 4 different style algorithms to use.

Stable Diffusion : You can try the site without signing in. Each prompt, or generation will generate 4 image options. There appears to be no limit to use for free.

I would also mention that 5th place Dream by Wombo only generates 1 image at a time vs. most other sites generating 4. I thought it was consistently strong despite being at a disadvantage. How did you score the sites?

2026 Update:

Based on what I know, the 2026 versions are much stronger overall than the 2023 and 2024 versions. In this section, I compare the winning 2023 from above to the best 2026 to show what I mean. The images are small, but can be clicked on to enlarge for a better view.

Prompt 1 - Make a medium difficulty maze of the Eiffel Tower in black and white with arrows at the start and finish

I am a huge fan of the Bing version from 2026. Nightcafe, Gemini, starryai 2023 is my order.

Prompt 2 - Draw a medium difficulty large maze of the Empire State Building with the start and goal embedded in the structure

Wow. I like all 3 from 2026. Hard to choose between the 3 when they are all so different. I’ll go Nightcafe, Canva, Stable diffusion, then 2023.

Prompt 3 - Draw a difficult maze of the White House pixel art style

I should mention that I think every single 2026 generation is better than the winner from 2023. Craiyon, Canva, Stable Diffusion, 2023 is my order.

Prompt 4 - Draw a difficult maze that looks like a drawing of a famous building in sketch style

2023 was a vibe pick I think. My order is Canva, Bing AI, Gemini and then 2023.

Prompt 5 - Draw a maze in the style of doyoumaze.com of a skyscraper in NYC

Nightcafe, Deepai, Canva, 2023. I could easily move the 2023 version higher. This is the first time I have considered it higher.

Prompt 6 - Draw a maze in the style of Sean C Jackson of a scene from a large outdoor market

I like them in the order shown.

Prompt 7 - Make a maze of a slice of an orange in color

I like the reverse order as shown, or if you read in an Asian language right to left.

Prompt 8 - Make a maze integrated on top of a photograph of a king sitting on his throne looking cantankerous beside his beautiful queen

Once again, I believe every image generated in 2026 is superior to every from 2023. My order is Craiyon, Canva, Bing and then 2023.

Prompt 9 - Make a solvable maze that is very large and very difficult to solve because it is so complex

Ai Image genrator for the win, the Nightcafe 2026, Nightcafe 2023, and Dream by Wombo.

Prompt 10 - Make a 3d render of a red and blue glossy cube maze

I wish I had never asked this prompt. I am never impressed with the output. The order is as shown above.

Summary and Conclusion: AI Generator Results for 2026 (including out 2023 winners):

That does it. Let’s tabulate our results and see how everyone did. I will go with a 4,3,2,1 scoring system again and I lumped all of the 2023 winners as one line. We have a new winner and a shake-up in the order. Our previous winner, starryai, disappointed this time. Only Bing remained in the top 3. Congratulations to Canva and Nightcafe for the improvement !

Update from 2026:

When I did this series in Spring of 2023 I found that none of the text to image generators were able to generate actual mazes, including this one. They were able to make images that looked maze-like, but none were solvable puzzles. The 10 prompts below are a record of what was possible then, but each generation of AI pushes the limit further on what is possible. I remade each maze in 2026 for comparison. All of these were made using text to image generation and not coding.

Making Maze Art with AI Image Generator

2023: Today I test out AI Image Generator. You can access the AI Image Generator website here. At the time of this writing it is ranked #1 on Google search for AI image generation (makes sense with that name). You can just go to the website and start using it , there is no sign-in or anything. Each prompt, or generation will generate 1 image. I found that the site would error out a lot, and during my 10 prompts I got about an equal number or errors. All prompts I use are the same for each site !

2026: Still no sign-in required. A basic looking site that is very type and go. I found the generations to go smoothly this time, with no errors like in 2023. There is a prompt options at the bottom you can select 3 different topics: Art Style (with 10 options); Subject (with 6 options); and Mood & Lighting (with 8 options). You can also upload an image for guidance. I used the default for all, with 1 image generated each time.

Prompt 1 - Make a medium difficulty maze of the Eiffel Tower in black and white with arrows at the start and finish

2023: It is almost a maze map of the city surrounding the Eiffel Tower which is a really nice idea, but it isn’t quite that.

2026: I like the white drawing on black. Not quite a maze but much improvement from 2023.

Prompt 2 - Draw a medium difficulty large maze of the Empire State Building with the start and goal embedded in the structure

2023: I see the base of the ESB and the core…with the top, actually 2 tops on each side of the building…

2026: I see a line drawing of the ESB. The surrounding buildings are weak and there is no maze but still this is a massive improvement.

Prompt 3 - Draw a difficult maze of the White House pixel art style

2023: Nope.

2026: Much better. We have a recognizable building and a maze like drawing on the lawn. The red flag is awkward. Just leave it white if you are going to color it incorrectly.

Prompt 4 - Draw a difficult maze that looks like a drawing of a famous building in sketch style

2023: I like the angles in the mazelike drawing that looks nothing like any famous building I can think of.

2026: I mean at least this time we have a building surrounded by a maze.

Prompt 5 - Draw a maze in the style of doyoumaze.com of a skyscraper in NYC

2023: Almost a maze. Not close to NYC or really a building either.

2026: This would be a really nice generation for my ESB prompt above, but it also fits here of course.

Prompt 6 - Draw a maze in the style of Sean C Jackson of a scene from a large outdoor market

2023: No market. It looks like a maze within a labyrinth which is a fun idea !

2026: Nice looking market with weird mazelike flower boxes. Better try but a miss none the less.

Prompt 7 - Make a maze of a slice of an orange in color

2023: I have never seen a slice of oranges cut into a square piece before.

2026: An orange slice with a very awkward circular center.

Prompt 8 - Make a maze integrated on top of a photograph of a king sitting on his throne looking cantankerous beside his beautiful queen

2023: Not even close.

2026: Hey now. A nice job of doing what was asked.

Prompt 9 - Make a solvable maze that is very large and very difficult to solve because it is so complex

2023: So large is this maze that it must be completely off the page. Is that a small man standing in the middle ?

2026: The maze is easy but it looks cool.

Prompt 10 - Make a 3d render of a red and blue glossy cube maze

2023: Not bad. Not good either.

2026: Interesting.

Summary and Conclusion:

2023: How did AI Image Generator do ? Once you get past all the errors it made some interesting concepts that could be used as inspiration for other mazes. I would not recommend it otherwise.

2026: This is on the low end of the generators I’ve tested but it is still much improved. It erred on the side of mazes in 2023, and images without a maze in 2026. The 2026 versions are much better and closer to what was asked for. I would still not recommend it.

The first change we see after 3 years is a new logo:

DeepAI logo
Deepai logo 2026

Making Maze Art with DeepAI

2023: Today I test out DeepAI. You can access the DeepAI website here. You can start generating images with prompts without signing in. Each prompt, or generation will generate 1 images. There are 12 styles to choose from (for free - 26 in total). All prompts I use are the same for each site !

2026: I used the website without signing in and it generated 1 image per prompt. There are 3 models available and I used the free default option (the other 2 are for subscribers). The styles have expanded from 12 in 2023 to over 100 today ! I used the default and let my prompt guide the generator. You can also choose 1 of 5 possible output shapes.

Prompt 1 - Make a medium difficulty maze of the Eiffel Tower in black and white with arrows at the start and finish

2023: I was confused at first. Did I get 4 images or 1. I guess this is one.

2026: Much improved. I see the tower and I like the reverse coloring and the mazelike lines in the sky.

Prompt 2 - Draw a medium difficulty large maze of the Empire State Building with the start and goal embedded in the structure

2023: Not a maze. It looks like the bottom and middle section of the ESB. Why no complete building ? Not sure.

2026: If I asked for a line drawing of NYC featuring the the Empire State Building from a drone view this would be perfect ! I see a minor attempt at a maze.

Prompt 3 - Draw a difficult maze of the White House pixel art style

2023: No.

2026: Yes (ish). I like that very Americana looking solid orange flag ! Not in pixel style. Maze on the lawn.

Prompt 4 - Draw a difficult maze that looks like a drawing of a famous building in sketch style

2023: What famous building is this supposed to be ?

2026: I am going to guess this is Big Ben surrounded by a fortress like maze, in a sketch style. It got a lot right this time.

Prompt 5 - Draw a maze in the style of doyoumaze.com of a skyscraper in NYC

2023: Almost cool, or kind of cool.

2026: Really good interpretation of what was asked for. I like that there are mazes both in the sky and on the ground.

Prompt 6 - Draw a maze in the style of Sean C Jackson of a scene from a large outdoor market

2023: This looks very interesting but misses the mark of what was asked for.

2026: If I blindly showed you these 2 images with no information would you guess they were the same prompt ? The market must be closed. Cool illustration.

Prompt 7 - Make a maze of a slice of an orange in color

2023: Hmmm. No.

2026: Deepai has the image part down very well - that is a slice of an orange. The maze part ? Not so much.

Prompt 8 - Make a maze integrated on top of a photograph of a king sitting on his throne looking cantankerous beside his beautiful queen

2023: Cantankerous looking guy in a charcoal jacket in an almost passport photo!! No queen. Fun circular labyrinth.

2026: So much improvement ! This is much closer to what the prompt requested.

Prompt 9 - Make a solvable maze that is very large and very difficult to solve because it is so complex

2023: Weird border on the right side. I wonder what made the AI put this image off center ?

2026: I like the creativity, the layers and the shadows. Not a maze but gives the feeling of one well.

Prompt 10 - Make a 3d render of a red and blue glossy cube maze

2023: This is a big miss for me. Where is the cube ?

2026: Lots of cubes.

Summary and Conclusion:

2023: How did DeepAI do ? A few hits with the black and white versions. Not so good with mazes. I was generally completely unimpressed. Needs work.

2026: A lot of improvement. Missed some things that were asked for but never spit out something totally odd like many generations from 2023. Seems to struggle with not only with generating a real solvable maze (all struggle with this), but anything that looks like a maze is often forgetten.

The first change I noticed on the site was a new logo. They moved the star to replace the dot on the i.

starryai logo
starryai logo 2026

Making Maze Art with StarryAI

2023: Today I test out StarryAI. You can access the starryai website here. You must sign in to use the site and you receive 5 credits (and it seems 5 credits each day). Each prompt, or generation will generate 4 images and cost a credit (If you want 8 variations that will cost you 3 credits). There are 6 styles to choose from: No style, Fantasy, Portrait, 3D Art, Wooltize and Anime. You may also upload a photo to give the AI “something to start with”. All prompts I use are the same for each site !

2026: I use this site when I need a background for a maze (typically my comic book cover mazes) so I have an account with many credits. The site has expanded from 6 to 90 styles since 2023! A prompt produces 4 options to choose from although you can adjust that. There are also options to remove things from an image - helpful if you upload a photo of your own. I use the free version and it seems the Pro has even more cool things behind the paywall.

Prompt 1 - Make a medium difficulty maze of the Eiffel Tower in black and white with arrows at the start and finish

2023: I thought all 4 generations where interesting (normally there are some really bad ones). And I struggled picking between 2 of them. This one was a bit more interesting because the the perspective from above.

2026: I do not know what is happening on the sides, but the Eiffel Tower is recognizable and includes some detail but something is off. No Maze.

Prompt 2 - Draw a medium difficulty large maze of the Empire State Building with the start and goal embedded in the structure

2023: Not really a maze, but it looks mazelike. 3 of the 4 images were really interesting and similar to this one. Made it hard to choose once again ! The cut-off of the iconic top of the building is really annoying.

2026: I like the color image of the ESB, but the surrounding buildings are too large. No maze again.

Prompt 3 - Draw a difficult maze of the White House pixel art style

2023: All 4 images generated were different and none was close to what I was looking for. They did have a videogame like quality to them at least.

2026: Outstanding illustration of the White House in a 3d Pixel art style. The grounds look maze-like as if this is a castle from 200 years ago in the UK countryside. Compared to 2023 this is light years ahead !

Prompt 4 - Draw a difficult maze that looks like a drawing of a famous building in sketch style

2023: I liked all 4 images, I do not know what is ahead AI site-wise, but StarryAI is consistent in above average quality. Not sure what famous building this is. Not really in a sketch style

2026: Used a sketch style to create a mazelike building. I like the perspective looking down into this fort/castle thing. Creative.

Prompt 5 - Draw a maze in the style of doyoumaze.com of a skyscraper in NYC

2023: All 4 had this perspective looking up the side of the skyscraper. This one included a maze.

2026: I choose this image because it looked like the lair of a comic book villain billionaire. I will probably use this as a background for one of my comic book covers. Unfortunately, there is no maze.

Prompt 6 - Draw a maze in the style of Sean C Jackson of a scene from a large outdoor market

2023: It is a large outdoor market where they sell long white pathways ? Would make a good coloring page.

2026: Beautiful corner market in a nice style. No maze again.

Prompt 7 - Make a maze of a slice of an orange in color

2023: This is the first interpretation where the AI generated a maze like structure in the actual orange itself.

2026: A really good image of a slice of an orange. No maze again.

Prompt 8 - Make a maze integrated on top of a photograph of a king sitting on his throne looking cantankerous beside his beautiful queen

2023: I must mention that 2 of the options included a queen, but I picked this one because the top of the chair has eyes, that king is dressed like Bond, James Bond with a fun look on his face, and the maze looks like brains. Just a lot to take in !

2026: So much adherence to what was asked for. The longer you look at the image the more you realize it is a mix of ideas, looks and centuries. The kings shoes. The background column. The 2 shades of grass turk to make a labyrinth.

Prompt 9 - Make a solvable maze that is very large and very difficult to solve because it is so complex

2023: All 4 were different and interesting. This is a solvable maze with many options if only we could read the sections on top and bottom.

2026: I am a big fan of this circular maze that looks like ruins made from marble. Could be used as a real maze.

Prompt 10 - Make a 3d render of a red and blue glossy cube maze

2023: The generations were all similar and this was the best.

2026: I like this generation. Almost a maze.

Summary and Conclusion:

2023: How did StarryAI do ? Consistent. I think there is a lot of potential here. I would mention again that I found it difficult to choose the best image multiple times. Easy to use. I recommend this site.

2026: I like the illustrations a lot but the maze portion was lacking. I saw improvement across the board. I use this site often, one of 3 that I use. I will say that starryai did not improve as much as other ai image generators, but mostly because it was so far ahead to start with !
