I found a blog post that includes some great pictures of the spot. According to a story I found, the clown sign went up in 1963 to grab customers attention. The clown also seems to be a marker for travelers who need directions !

The maze: I made the maze in a free drawn construction so that the walls of the maze matched the unique shape of the clown outfit.
