Hubie Halloween (2020) Movie Review

Hubie Halloween (2020) IMDB

Hubie Halloween movie poster

By Netflix - Google, Fair use,

Hubie Dubois, played by Adam Sandler, is the story of a childlike grown-up who protects his hometown each Halloween from bad actors and makes sure they play within the rules. He is mocked each year by everyone in the town. This is a family movie exclusive to Netflix with a ensemble cast. You get Dan Patrick, Shaq, and your standard alumnus of SNL to name a few.

Now this is not a maze movie, but there is a reason this is included on the site. During one sequence of the movie there is a report of a lost child in a corn maze and Hubie goes to check out the situation. Of course it is all a practical joke.

The movie centers around a Halloween where a convict has escaped from the local mental institution. Can Hubie, mocked for his entire life, save the town ? Well, regardless of how things turn out, the movie has weak laughs and is one of Sandler’s weakest films. Kids might like it, but most adults will not.

I give the movie a 5/10.

Maze of the Week #12 - Waterbury Clock Tower Maze

Maze #12 of the year features the Waterbury Clock Tower at Waterbury Union Station in Waterbury, Connecticut. It is a building maze, and is the first maze that does not use perspective, and instead uses a flat, geometric drawing of the tower. The maze is a simple standard construction. I did 2 versions, the original in black and white, and a colorized version. For the colorized version I used the drone footage below (Thank you Manxcat73) ! Without that footage, the pictures I found did not show the colors clearly.

Some information about Waterbury Union Station

The station was built in 1909 and it features a 240 foot tower, the subject of my maze. The station is the last stop for its branch of the Metro North railroad. It is a long 2 hours and 45 minutes to Grand Central Station. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 8, 1978.

Here is some wonderful drone footage of the tower where you can see it’s features and the surrounding town up close !

The maze:

A simple black and white maze. I should mention this is not REALLY a maze of the clock tower, but the top portion of it, I I made the full tower to scale it would be much longer !!

And here is the colorized version of the maze. Which version do you prefer ?

I hope you enjoy the maze. You can find downloads of the maze at the mazes permanent home.

A great maze of a movie theater that I think you are going to like !

Batman and Robin Walk Into a Maze...

I review any movie that has a maze scene in it. I have done over 50 movie reviews, including The Batman (2022) but I never do television reviews. However, today I was scrolling through YouTube and a few videos caught my eye because they include two of my favorite things: Mazes and Batman, and so I wanted to do a quick post to share these with you. So this isn’t a review, but a specific episode you might like to watch. That being said I have seen every episode of this series and WOULD recommend it. It won many awards and is considered a top 30 tv series of all time !

From Batman the Animated Series, the Riddler gets Batman and Robin into a maze at the amusement park in Gotham (A favorite place of the Joker also). This maze scene is broken down into 2 different segments from 2 different people, but I suggest you watch the entire episode S1E41, called If You're So Smart, Why Aren't You Rich? (Episode originally aired Nov 18, 1992).

If you are into television and movie artwork check out Phantom City Creative out of Toronto. Great posters and designs from your favorite movies. They made the limited edition poster for this episode that you see below, which I love (could it be because of the maze ?)

The Batman movie poster

First I want to say there are no spoilers per say in this review but I will speak about some plot details of the movie that do not give anything away. So now you know.

Let’s start off with the good. This is all about Batman the detective. It is not an action movie although there are a few action sequences. It is a dark movie. Gotham is well represented as a gritty, large city with the flavor of a merged NYC and Chicago. The cinemaphotography is very good. The acting is very good from multiple characters, and Pattinson fits as Batman IMO. All in all this a movie that everyone is flocking to see in theaters and for good reason.

Now, some of the not so good. This is a slow building plot. It is a murder mystery and everything comes together in the end, but not in a fast paced way. It would be ideal if they had cut 20 minutes from the movie (it clocks in at just under 3 hours) and they played it at 1.3X speed. I suggest cutting some of the scenes with soggy boots and very slow walking….or give us an INTERMISSION !! Half of the theater I was in got up at some point during the movie to go to the bathroom. Everyone else was probably uncomfortable. Also, skip the end credits scene.

This review is on a maze website, and that is because a maze is part of the plot of the movie. A serial killer is on the loose in Gotham. The second victim is killed in a very clever way using rats in a maze. Of course this includes a riddle as a clue. And everything else you’ll need to learn by watching the movie.

This film is definitely worth your time, just don’t drink too much before going to the theater, I give the movie a 7.5/10.
